The Chennells family have been an integral part of the Eshowe community for four generations, so it was no surprise that everyone waved at us as Graham and I drove through town. We were heading to the steep Signals Hill that looks across the valley to enjoy a welcome sundowner and watch the evening cane fires.....
.... As the sun bade us farewell, he told me of his passion to put Eshowe on the tourist map. After all, it was from here that the King Shaka built the Zulu empire. The family home has been elegantly converted with three light and airy bedrooms. Here the gentle morning sun will caress you from your king-size bed and the sizzling of bacon will draw you to the mahogany breakfast table. You may well spend your time back at the guest house reading on the black-and-white tiled stoep, sipping Graham’s award-winning Zulu Blonde beer or diving into the pool that looks out into the hills. But I highly recommend getting out and about and taking advantage of what this wonderfully generous family have to offer. Depending on your mood, you may find yourself whisked off to the Zulu Kings Reed Dance, or strolling through the Dlinzi Forest Aerial Boardwalk… or do as I did and spend the most emotionally uplifting afternoon of your life with the children at the AIDS orphanage, learning Zulu songs. The memories I took from my stay here will undoubtedly remain with me forever.
