Such a pretty place that TV crews come to film here and newly-weds have their photos taken in front of the agapanthus. It’s intimate too, this sweet little studio that sits just apart from the house and overlooks an abundant garden.....
.... Pat reeled out the names: hydrangeas, indigenous geraniums, drooping willows, spectacular cannas, the remains of arum lilies after the porcupines had finished with them (see her collection of quills)... and I took it all in hoping to improve my off-the-cuff horticultural knowledge. She leafs through her guest book and remembers every visitor individually, beginning with her first eight years ago. It’s one of the reasons why guests tend to come back. They also love the simplicity of having just what they need. The kitchenette is well stocked, there’s a writing table for postcards, wicker chairs for reading, a crisp white duvet to slink under and a sleeper-couch for any extras. We took tea on the little private balcony draped in shrub and flower, enjoying the bird-life and a splendidly trimmed lawn that dropped, by levels, past a once-in-vogue trompe l’oeil and a contemplative little pond to the garden gate below. Here, beneath a lushly-grassed and shaded arbour (shared with the neighbours), the Princess Kasteel stream trickles down from the golf and wine estates of Groot Constantia. There’s no better breakfast seat this side of Table Mountain and you should choose at least one evening to braai by the large salt-water pool. Lanterns hang and the whole garden is lit by night.
