Take the stunning scenic drive from Taihape out to the rural village of Kimbolton and reward your view-gazing efforts with a cool beer or crisp New Zealand wine in Hansen’s Café and Bar. Actually, you may as well treat yourself to lunch in this vibey place. Feeling almost local in the warm traditional setting I opted for a hearty steak sandwich, which arrived on flour-soft rye bread and was presented with the biggest of smiles. Everything on the New Zealand and café style menu is fresh, tasty and fantastic value.

This ever obliging and consistent restaurant bends over backwards, frontwards and even sideways to keep its guests smiling. When one GG owner visited recently she made a special, off-the-menu request for pan-fried fish. Out it came, “beautifully presented, and beautifully cooked with the wee salad in a ramekin.” And if you decide to stick to the menu, the restaurant is great on spices - especially Asian fusion.
