Waves roll into the bay, five foot high when I visited, and crash against rocks right in front of Schulphoek Seafront Guesthouse. The sitting room has one of the most exciting sea views you could hope for and, naturally, whales steal into Schulphoek Bay during the season for private viewings.....
.... The best room, Scallop - I don’t think there is any doubt, despite the extremely high overall standard! - is upstairs, the whole seaward wall an expanse of window with a sliding glass door and parapet. The other rooms, although without sea views, have solid, hand-crafted oak or mahogany beds and spectacular bathrooms with double sinks, double showers and spa-baths. As I sunk into mine I laughed, safe in the knowledge that as far as luxury goes you will not find better anywhere. Not many places in this area feel the need to provide in-house dinners, but your hosts are not taking chances on outside eateries. Guests who want to guarantee themselves delicious food stay in (4-course menu du jour with herbs, salad and veg picked straight from their vegetable garden) and eat at one long table, on chairs made from vintage wine vats. Dinner is a lively affair, before which you will be led to the exhaustive cellar where you can choose from the finest South African wines. Schulphoek is an intimate, state-of-the-art seaside lodge, but still the sort of place where guests socialise with each other, drinks are on an honesty system and meals are eaten together. Massages and treatments on request.
