Lily Pond Lodge is a monument to mathematical modernity (straight lines and strong angles prevail), its slickness counterbalanced by the natural surroundings (beige and taupe walls contrast strikingly with the greenery of Nature's Valley). Everyone benefits from the tranquility and abundant birdlife here. The lily ponds provide a lush home to a mesmerising array of flora and fauna. The frogs serenaded me with their croaky chorus as I braved a mid-winter swim in the black infinity pool. I might go for the warmer option next time of the jacuzzi on the pond's edge. But any excuse to soak in my polished concrete bath and an opportunity to admire the garden suite's quirky design. Think African colonial (tribal paintings, gauzy curtains and kudu-skin rugs) with every bit of stuffiness surgically removed and replaced with funky exposed brickwork, slick crete-stone floors and a bright ochre-and-white colour scheme. In summer, the lilies outside are a carpet of colour and balmy evenings are set aside for drinks and nibbles followed by a many-coursed, mouth-watering meal in the (equally angular) restaurant. Margret, a supremely good cook, has trained a marvelous Xhosa chef, Vincent, who has a flair for flavour fusions; he crosses oriental and European dishes, and is fond of African bobotie wonton starters and sushi ice desserts. All the staff are friendly, including Tony and Maria, long-standing GG owners from Buffalo Hills, who are currently managing Lily Pond. Massage treatments on request.

What to Do in the Area

Things To Do

There are LOTS of things to do in this area called The Crags. Just across the valley (through the indigenous forest) there is Monkeyland primate sanctuary, the Birds of Eden, the Elephant sanctuary and Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre - it's our Animal Alley. Then, there is an arts and craft route in the area - stunning raku fired pottery, glorious soft leather bags, bright feather dusters, mohair blankets & socks, sun-cloths, hand painted fabrics, jewellery, beaded bags, sculpture, African artefacts, interesting little must-have noo-noos, you name it, something for everone and a good excuse to shop.
Or you can go to the most beautiful beach and lagoon of SA - Nature's Valley.
About 15km away there is the highest bungy jump in the world at Bloukrans, or you can go further onto Tsitsikamma and do the Treetops Canopy Walk. We can keep you busy for ages here and help to plan your day!
Looking forward to see you. Niels & Margret
