A tiny gravel road twists along the sides of one idyllic to another yet more secluded valley, past old Cape Dutch farm buildings and jaw-dropping views, eventually arriving at the Burtons’ Victorian-colonial homestead. Marie and Grant ran a popular wilderness lodge in Namibia before trawling southern Africa for a new Eden, and it took years to find. It was worth the wait. The view from the verandah, where guest meals are served around one sociable table with your hosts (and where I sampled mouthwatering smoked snoek mousse and ostrich casserole), crosses a valley and climbs the Burtons’ own mountain before joining the vast Swartberg Nature Reserve, now a World Heritage Site. What with paths winding up to intimate rock pools and excellent marked mountain trails, the opportunities for merry traipsing are limitless. When it gets hot, you can swim in the river, dam or pool, or collapse inside the gloriously cool house with its original marble fireplace and pine and yellowwood flooring. Take your pick from luxury rooms set apart from the homestead with slate floors, fabulous mountain views and surreal stoep stargazing, or more traditional bedrooms in the main house – equally inviting. It really is an incredible area to explore, with kloofs, mountain wilderness, half-forgotten roads and many animals and birds to look out for. But, best of all, you come back to award-winning hospitality: delicious table d’hôte dinners, welcoming hosts and a truly relaxed household. Give yourselves two nights at least!
