My first introduction to Madikwe and I was instantly smitten. Jaci's inimitably luxurious style is as colourful, warm and vibrant as the wonderfully charming people who will bring to life the magic of Africa during your stay. The family-oriented Jaci's Safari Lodge is laid-back and homely; spacious thatched suites with tented sides, fireplaces, huge stone baths and outdoor rain showers, the comfiest beds, soft white linen and plush purple bath robes. Two pools, a gym and a treatment room (where I enjoyed one of the best massages of my life) mean that there is plenty to do between game drives. A short walk along the river takes you to the Jaci's Tree Lodge, reserved for adults only and offering slightly more grown-up, but equally relaxed and romantic accommodation in thatched wooden cabins built on stilts and joined by wooden walkways. My favourite place to sleep is above Jaci's Tree Lodge's waterhole hide, where guests can choose to sleep under inky black skies, gazing at the stars and listening out for thirsty nocturnal visitors. But the coolest thing by far is the new submerged Terrapin Hide. Shuffle through the illuminated underground tunnel and emerge in the middle of the waterhole, eye-level with the water and the animals and birds that flock to it. This makes the perfect spot to hone your photography skills and learn from resident experts during one of Jaci's Lodges' exclusive, specialised birding and photographic safari packages.
