Here is a long-standing (since the very first edition) Greenwood Guides favourite! Mosetlha puts the wild into wilderness. No doors or glass here as they would hinder the feel and dust of Africa permeating your very core; no worries either as you leave them at the gate. Facilities are basic but real; guests draw their own hot water from a donkey-boiler before proceeding to the shower. Recently the kitchen was extended and a new thatch and stone lapa has been added for guests to read, relax and compare sightings, but the authenticity remains untainted. The wooden cabins are comfortable, but used only for sleeping - you are here for the wilderness experience of the outdoors. Chris’s passion for conservation and his environment shines through and is contagious (which reminds me to say that the area is malaria-free). His guests depart much the wiser, not only because of the game drives, but also (conditions permitting) because of the superb guided wilderness walks. Yes, the Madikwe Game Reserve (75,000 hectares) has the so-called ‘Big Five’, but a game lodge worth its salt (such as this) will fire your imagination about the whole food chain. A highlight of the reserve for me is the loc system - a maximum of two vehicles per game viewing at any one time - ensuring a more intimate experience for you and less stressful one for the animal. Even the camp itself is an education - all sorts of birds, small mammals and antelopes venture in. Come for a genuine and memorable bush experience. Children welcome from 8 years old up.
