Bernd and Beate can barely contain the happiness they derive from Acorn House, and their enthusiasm rubs off quickly on all but the stoniest of their visitors. I was a pushover. The listed building, designed by busy Sir Herbert Baker in 1904, sits on the sunny, sea-facing slopes of Table Mountain with tip-top views to Table Bay. (You can ‘try before you buy’ as there is a niftily-positioned webcam that uploads Acorn’s views hourly to the website.) The house is typical Sir Herbert with timber colonnade and huge double-fronted verandah. There is an immaculate garden with black-slate swimming pool and a sun-lounging lawn, cleanly demarcated by agapanthus and lavender bushes. Breakfast, often served by the pool ("until the last guest comes down", i.e. you can sleep in), is a no-holds-barred display of meats, cheeses, eggs and freshly-squeezed fruit juices; "probably the second-best breakfast in Cape Town" is Beate’s carefully-worded claim! I smiled my way around Acorn as I noted the personal touches fresh mint water (with mint from the garden) and upstairs, in your bedroom you will find notes of welcome or farewell, chocolates and sprigs of lavender. Wine-lovers are also well served: Bernd is pazzo for the stuff, and regularly visits local vineyards to ensure that his house wines are up-to-the-moment (just for his guests’ benefit, of course). Having lived in South Africa for several years now, Bernd and Beate are still awash with excitement about their surroundings; a stay in Acorn House will leave you feeling much the same. Children welcome over 2 years old.
