As I rolled in from a hot and bothersome day of travel, the high, whitewashed gables of Dunstone’s lounge were a welcome retreat. If ever there was a place to recover, it was here. Abbi did a degree in hospitality and it glowed through as she pressed a cool drink into my hand and beckoned me into the shade. Soft sofas arranged around a lovely fireplace promised cosiness in winter, but wafts of lavender and roses drifting over the stoep and through the open windows spoke of the many joys of summer and gradually drew me back outside. Abbi’s ridgeback and a living replica of the Dunstone weimaraner bounded through the shiraz vines in front of the stoep as I reclined to enjoy the view with a glass of wine. The whole place is a working guava and grape farm, with its own boutique winery where guest involvement is encouraged. If wine-making is your thing… pick, foot-stomp, bottle and taste to your heart's content! The winery also hosts Abbi’s restaurant, The Stone Kitchen, serving delicious local produce with a British twist. The highlight of the recently-renovated stable rooms is the Lavender Suite with a luxurious four-poster and a view over the flowerbeds to the saltwater pool and beyond. Guava Cottage has its own mini-vineyard and stoep and lies in front of the guava plantation. A granite-topped kitchen with dishwasher and generous range mean you can really self-cater in style. The cottage even has its own solar panel-heated pool, garden and braai area.
