I didn’t get the pleasure of meeting Lance who’s based in London, but his friendly voice beaming down the phone was a reassuring start. And sure enough Fort Vic in Simon’s Town, his second home, did not disappoint.....
.... The house was built by his neighbours and is entirely made of wood and stone dug from the mountain it sits upon. Inside is a forest of dense wood beams, bamboo ceilings, red stone walls and open-plan wooden staircases making it feel a bit like a bush lodge. The real drawcard here, however, is the view. You don’t - can't! - get much more of a sea view than this and the best place to absorb it from is the huge master bedroom upstairs, although big sliding glass doors run throughout the house. Actually there are many places to enjoy the view from: the plunge pool, the sitting room or the smart kitchen lined with yellowwood cupboards and fitted with a central island, complete with gas cooker and fancy oven. The motto here is keep it simple with cream sheets, stylish free-standing showers and soft natural furnishings like basket lamps, wicker chairs and red cushions. The black cloth hanging in the kitchen covered in badges from all over the world is testament to Lance’s travelling days prior to finding his favourite destination, Fort Vic. Although this is definitely a self-catering arrangement, the house manager is available at all times to troubleshoot any problems, arrange trips or make bookings. Whales can be viewed (July - October) from the master bedroom and the pool.
