Rouxwil is perfectly positioned in the middle of nowhere. I say ‘perfectly’ because nowhere happens to be in the middle of everywhere. You couldn’t wish for a better base from which to explore the region, with Hermanus, the Winelands, Greyton and Cape Agulhas all less than an hour away. The farmhouse is always buzzing with its farm kitchen, lounge with open fireplace and outside braai area. This is where Thys holds sway, whether grilling kudu sirloins over open coals or dispensing encyclopaedic advice on the surrounding towns' best-kept secrets (his is a brain worth picking). Since the closest restaurant is thirty kilometres away, it is an added blessing that food is one of O’nel’s great talents. She likes her guests to taste traditional recipes, but regularly throws a wild-card onto her menu… springbok shanks, for example. And, having voted Rouxwil 'South Africa's best farm accommodation' for three consecutive years, her guests seem to approve. The rooms are certainly not what you would expect on a wheat and sheep farm. No rusted old plumbing or creaking termite-eaten floorboards here. Rather slate tiles, stainless-steel power-showers and plenty of king-size comfort. Sliding doors open onto gardens of cycads, roses and lavender, eland, antelope and blue cranes. Come to think of it, with a pool to cool off in, farm tours and a river raft for sundowners, why would you want to leave Rouxwil at all? But apart from the views, food, river and wildlife, what makes this place an essential GG entry are the two charming people at the helm.
