Where else can you dine in arguably the best restaurant on the Garden Route and then wander upstairs to snuggle into bed beneath goose-down duvets? This is a place whose name is breathed in quiet reverence all along the coast. Brushed up crisply for dinner after a three-chapter-long soak in the bath, I stepped from underfloor-heated tiles onto the shared balcony, to watch geese flighting across a sunset lagoon. Then it was an easy meander down to the guest lounge for an apéritif, where Rudolf, husband to head-chef Lizelle (her culinary accolades, which hang in the loo, are very encouraging indeed), gave a sensuous description of a South African-inspired menu combined with European haute cuisine. Agonising, I finally plumped for snoek mousse and loin of springbok, variously interspersed by an amuse-bouche of kudu carpaccio and delicious butternut soup. The intimate restaurant discreetly backs onto a fireplace flanked by sheer windows looking out onto the water. For dessert I cracked into an exquisitely fruity crème brûlée, even as my waiter taught me the basics of Xhosa. Following a 3-course, crumpet-driven, meticulously-prepared breakfast (even the perfectly ripe strawberries are first brushed in a light almond syrup) in ebullient sunshine I found myself discussing semantics and champion deep-sea angling with owners Elsabé and Phillip, who had originally planned to run only a guesthouse… that was before they invited their daughter to cook.
