If ever a place resembled its owner, this is it. Unpretentious, laid-back, friendly and personal, John has bestowed these qualities on a lodge, part of which he built with his own hands using a special vertical construction technique (just nod and make understanding grunts). These are also the rooms of choice where pine and timber frame a scene of dark wood furniture, inviting beds and earthy rugs, soothed by white-washed walls and alabaster bathrooms. All open breezily onto the garden. There's a refreshing youthful energy here as well, something else you'll notice about John, who leads a tremendously healthy life. I challenge anyone to guess his correct age. After many years in the hospitality industry, it was his dream to start his own guesthouse and where better than on family ground, whose hill-top seat looks all the way down the valley into Plett and out to the Indian Ocean. There are plenty of good restaurants in the town close by, but you're welcome to bring your own grub and cook lunch and dinner in the kitchen. That's if you're still hungry after a bonanza breakfast with the abundant birdlife. The garden is a great place to kick back with a cold beer, from the pool side if you so wish, and enjoy a gently sloping verdant scene of fifteen acres worth of lawn, tree and untouched bush, across which playful house hounds tumble. "It's convenient and tranquil," says John. It's very good value too. Plettenberg Bay Country Club and golf course is a couple of minutes away.
