Business first brought Oliver (Swiss-born) to South Africa, but it's his heart that makes him stay. It didn't take long for his partner Stephan to fall in love too. The main house, whose oak floors were originally laid in the 1850s, is flooded with life and colour, manifested in the vibrant red reception hall, mounted with the words: “We create our tomorrow, By what we dream today”. All the bedrooms are rich in light and colour, each with a little touch of the modern and urban to complement the Victorian interior. Each room is named after a different local artist, whose work adorns the walls. I would personally opt for 'Nicolaas Maritz' with its deep Victorian clawfoot bath. But it was the garden that finally stole the laurels, with its ancient pepper trees, fountain spraying water over blossoming roses and a mass of lavender, small wonder then that Darling Lodge is now officially part of the Swartland Birding Route. I could think of nothing better than sitting on the shaded stoep with a good book in one hand, perhaps a glass of wine from one of the five nearby vineyards in the other, intermittently watching the industrious weaver-birds build their nests and taking a dip in the pool between chapters. My stay was rounded off with a delicious breakfast presented with care and thought. “We like to celebrate breakfast... it's important to celebrate the new day”, Stephan explains. A darling lodge indeed. Book early during Flower Season and the Voorkamerfest, and ask about the Darling Mystery Trail and garden cinema screenings in January!
