There are eighty-six mammal and over 260 bird species in De Hoop Nature Reserve and, armed with the checklists I was handed on arrival, I was soon enthusiastically ticking them off. Although I would have loved to see them all (and I did spot bontebok, eland, caracal and Cape mountain zebra), for the clarity of my sprawling notes it was a blessing we didn’t. Hidden within the Cape Nature reserve, De Hoop Collection’s accommodation is as eclectic as the wildlife. I stayed in the De Hoop Village, a suburban-style street made up of nine whitewashed three-bedroom cottages. The table in the rustic kitchen was already laid when I arrived and as I sat having my supper a bontebok strolled past eating his. My double bed - covered in white linen and crowned by a handsome headboard - lay beneath a row of fynbos prints. Pretty thatched suites with romantic baths and a few basic rondavels with outside showers overlook the vlei, a stunning landmark that turns to gold at dusk. Houses with larger rooms as well as discreet camp sites are dotted among the milkwood trees. Luxury lies at the other end of the veld where the four-bedroom Opstal Manor House has been returned to its former glory. The Fig Tree Restaurant can be found here, serving excellent food and drink all day, and dispensing indispensable sundowners. 2015 also saw the opening of the brand new, luxurious Africology spa, so if you still have some city cares you need to shake off, you can now have them pampered and massaged away.
