‘Majini’ is Swahili for ‘by the water’ but it wasn’t apparent to me why the name was appropriate until I had strolled past vivid flowerbeds to the bottom of the velvety garden. A large wooden deck awaited, complete with braai area, one side opening to the pool and the other to a small dam and stream where Suzy’s chickens and ducks squabble with views of the lesser-known Elephants’ Eye Peak in the background. This little farmyard setting neighbours a flourishing veggie patch and Suzy’s guests are encouraged to help themselves to any produce, passion-fruit or greenery that they like the look of. The garden offerings don’t end there either. The lawn to the main house (and to the mini-gym if you feel in that way inclined) winds its way through beautifully-tended lilies and colourful daisies to a well-stocked herb garden. A self-confessed auction-addict, Kenyan-born Suzy has decorated the Pool House and The Gallery simply, but with great care. Touches like well-thumbed paperbacks and a beautiful kiwinet over the Pool House bed make the cottage familiar, while The Gallery is a showcase for Suzy's eclectic taste in art, with a range of paintings and prints collected from many parts of the world. Suzy easily high-jumps the hospitality bar set by most self-catering owners, happily stocking the fridge for guests, loaning her garden for small parties or braais by the boma fire where the lights in the trees glow magnificently at night. A sign in the loo reads, ‘Always Give Thanks’. At award-winning Majini Guest House this is an unnecessary reminder. Satellite TV and fibre internet connection available.
