Within one hour of PE airport I was sipping a nectareously refreshing lemonade, squeezed from one of eight variants of citrus plantations near River Bend. Within another hour I’d moved on to vetkoek (a traditional ‘doughnut’ bread prepared with gourmet ingredients - irresistible!), followed by a fanned power kip and a reviving speed-dip in the pool. And now six of us, newly acquainted, were out spotting on a game drive – the sun, scent and space of the bush already working their magic, dissipating the rest of the world into the dust clouds behind us. I’ve been to Addo already and I’ve also been lucky enough to experience several other game drives up and down the country, but in this 400-odd-minute taster of the Nyathi section of the park - to which this lodge enjoys private access - I felt I could have been freshly landed from Heathrow. Under our super-approachable ranger, we learned anything from how the leopard tortoise is the only member of its family able to swim, to the cause for the genetic recession of female elephants’ tusks in this area. We also fell into a trance at the beauty of a herd of 50+ ellies crossing grasslands under our noses. Folks don’t come here for ‘big five kills’, nor is Addo comparable to Kruger or Botswana. This park knows its draw-cards and River Bend specialises in providing guests with an effortless, enchanting and affecting experience to take away with them. It is also very luxurious! Children of all ages are very welcome and expertly attended to - with activities and specialist game drives to keep them entertained.
