Clanwilliam is at the centre of all things wild and wonderful in the Western Cape: stunning spring flowers, spectacular sandstone formations, expansive mountain scenery, bushman rock art, the unspoilt West Coast and Cederberg, rooibos tea. And Saint du Barrys is at the centre of all things warm and welcoming: convivial, generous, interesting hosts, delicious home-cooked food, large, comfortable bedrooms kitted out with pretty four-posters and blush-red fabrics.....

.... It was with immense pleasure that I turned off Clanwilliam’s main road, parked under a cloud of pink bougainvillea and walked over to greet Joan and Wally, who appeared cheerily from behind a vast and venerable fig tree. The couple are a muddle of Scots and Swiss blood, but thoroughly naturalised. Dr. Willies is an English prof and practitioner of homeopathic medicine, while Joan fostered disabled children for years near Cape Town. The thatched house is set in an L-shape around a large courtyard which has become, in these bird-lovers’ hands, a veritable concert hall – not counting Ramius the parrot, who chats away disconcertingly in the lounge. I thoroughly recommend Joan’s dinners and Wally’s choice of wines, many from the Cape’s highest vineyard. In the morning, after indulging in a breakfast spread of home-made breads, fresh juice and the full works, Joan and Wally will send you on your way with books, maps and good advice, then welcome you back in the evening with a restorative sundowner. Allow yourself at least a few days to explore.
