Currie Cup semi-final day at Newlands stadium. Not the best day to be trawling the traffic-jammed area in search of guest houses and certainly a time slot to test the convivial mettle of any South African host.…
… Drs Stuart and Judy passed the test with gracious aplomb as they proudly showed me around Roodenburg. Ideally located on the main road through Newlands/Rondebosch, Roodenburg was built in 1882 and more recently transformed from a pathology laboratory into a guest-house. A first even for the Greenwood Guide. Original features remain including the ornate stained-glass windows, intricate woodwork and colourful fireplaces. The scene was intriguing – youthful cheers emanating from the TV room, as Western Province took the lead; a couple of psychologists were taking tea by the glistening pool and discussing, no doubt, non-rugby related topics, while an elderly lady took advantage of the empty upstairs lounge to complete a masterful spot of knitting. “Oh, and there’s a young cricketer staying in the Paisley Suite. He’s staying for the Summer.” Lucky him. Each room is uniquely decorated with lavish wallpapers, immaculately-upholstered armchairs, heavy curtains and lush carpets or cherry wood floors. Bathrooms are either modern marble or classic Victorian, replete with claw-foot baths. Gorgeous personal touches abound, from the luxurious Moyo products to the enticing black ginger diffusers - symptomatic of a doctor’s attention to detail. Roodenburg is a fantastic and generous guest-house with an excellent bedside manner!
