A straight 300-metre drive up two narrow strips of weathered red brick, past roaming gangs of guinea-fowl and rows of vines, takes you to Belair, a beautiful guest house on its own farm beneath the round dome of Paarl Mountain. The view from the doorstep (and the garden and pool) across the valley towards Franschhoek and the Groot Drakenstein is spectacular… and it is rather lovely inside too.....

.... Steps lead up from a large threshing-circle style driveway into the hallway and open sitting room, which mixes antique furniture with comfy sofas and bookshelves bursting with swashbucklers. Behind is the bright breakfast conservatory, which looks onto a rose-filled garden. Janet’s light but stylish touch is in evidence everywhere at Belair, from the terraced gardens to the bedrooms themselves, each with its own distinct character. All the rooms are wonderful, but the two new luxury suites, complete with fireplaces, open-plan baths and deep Flokati rugs, are sumptuous! The honeymoon suite has a deck overhanging the rose garden with a double daybed on it, while the other suite has a patio area with a swing couch. From the house, it’s a short walk up to the dam where birdlife abounds among the reeds (look out for buzzards when it all goes quiet), a great spot for a sundowner. For the more energetic, Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve is further up the hill, and there are lots of golf courses nearby. Cape Town Waterfront is also only 35 minutes away and there are great restaurants in Paarl. Bikes for hire.
