From whichever direction you travel, driving the Du Toitskloof Pass is awe-inspiring and well worth a detour. After gliding down the pass with a smile, I turned sharply at the Amberg sign and meandered up the stone drive to find Helga awaiting my arrival with her own beaming smile and delicious home-made cake. Helga and Bernd spend half of the year at Amberg and half back in Germany working in the antiques industry. Amberg is consequently filled with Bernd's collection of art deco furniture. I stood for some time in my cottage admiring a 1920s wardrobe from France. The antiques contrast perfectly with the modern, slightly industrial, 'loft'-style architecture of the Studio and new cottages Talblik ('valley view') 1 and 2. Having once owned an art gallery in Germany, Helga's stunning new exhibition/breakfast room/coffee shop will knock your socks off. The pièces de résistance are a spectacular 1890s German apothecary unit flanking two walls and my favourite, a beautiful grand piano. Although, like me, Helga insists that her playing is "not for the public!", small concerts and open evenings are held here. Be reassured that the little things haven't been forgotten either. The kitchens are filled with top-of-the-range kitchenware. Helga and Bernd have not only provided high-class accommodation, but also shared their love for art and design. Extra points for spotting the decidedly 'cheeky' artwork dotted around! Bicycles available.
