Driving over the bridge onto the verdant Kanoneiland, the largest inhabited inland island in the country, I had to remind myself I was still in the Northern Cape! With a day on desert roads, the site of bountiful vineyards and the flowing water of the Orange River was a site for sore and decidedly dusty eyes. Leaving the car in the giant parking barn I was met by the lovely Elmarie and shown to my room, Ruby Cabernet. When I say ‘room’ I actually mean converted stable… all to myself! The space is filled with unique and ingenious designs crafted by Elmarie’s husband Theuns: the long dining table made from reclaimed seringa wood using pipes for legs, bare copper piping in the bathroom - a blue pebble indicating the cold taps, the bed made from wild olive with stumps as side tables; and it’s all enhanced by an intelligent use of lighting, elegant antiques and leather sofas. There are cosier suites on the other side of the house, furnished in the same style and all with their own personality. To complement the hand-crafted nature of this working raisin farm, Elmarie, an advocate of the slow cooking movement, is a genius in the kitchen. Joined by my fellow guests, and sitting round another of Theuns’ masterpieces, we enjoyed wine from the local area along with sampmeal and a hearty oxtail stew. To really relax into some slow living, stay for a few days. New executive chef Eduard with assistant chef Bruce are also on hand for evening meals and weddings/functions/conferences. A new exciting addition is the African Vineyard Wellness Spa opening in April 2016.
