I promise you, I had every intention of hiking on the farm of De Oude Kraal, searching out remnants of the Boer War, stalking game or even visiting the Voortrekker graves. But one look at my suite with reclaimed veld fire branches sprouting out of the headboard, the sumptuous bed, sofa, TV and an amazing Balinese bathroom, with spa-tub and super-shower, I knew I wasn’t going anywhere! Except perhaps the spa... Who could resist sampling one or two of the massages serenaded by flowing water and birdsong? An indulgent few hours of relaxation ensued before I settled on the simple luxury of my verandah and the unspoiled view of the sun setting over the veld, a silhouetted wind pump off centre completing the perfect picture. Feeling thoroughly content I strolled through the picturesque gardens to the bar for a pre-dinner drink. Fortunately I wasn’t wearing my best tie as I feel it may have been confiscated and added to Gerhard’s collection on the wall. Thirst quenched, I was led through the main house – in the family for six generations – to the dining room for five courses of candle-lit deliciousness. The food, a fusion of fine dining and hearty farmhouse, has won many an award, as has the wine list, and it’s worth having a good look round the cellar. It would have been prudent for me to enjoy a pre-boer-breakfast stretch of the legs, but that didn’t happen either; the setting and comfort lend itself to an altogether more leisurely mind-set. On-site spa treatments available.
