The closer you get to Porcupine Hills the quicker your worries dissolve. In fact, by the time I arrived I had barely a care in the world. Tony, Cha and family have injected life and energy into the farm that’s hard to miss: the olive grove has been nurtured, the renosterbos is strong and the birdlife abundant. On the action side of the farm – wifi, phone signal – there are two fabulous homes, the Farm House and the Eyrie. On the nature side – no signal! - is idyllic River Cottage. We were staying in the sumptuous Eyrie, where the view from the deck is quite simply… awe-inspiring. The house has a large lounge-cum-dining room, farmhouse kitchen, pool and three en-suite bathrooms, two with outdoor showers. Sitting out on the shaded deck we chatted over drinks and olives – grown on the farm – about ways of utilizing the two rivers running through the farm, how to eat the artichokes we’d just picked, and what meaning Balthazar – a fila Braziliero (which is a dog!) - was trying to convey with his grooving in the bamboo. Tony pointed skyward in the direction of the mountains on the other side of the valley. The two resident black eagles with their soon-to-depart juvenile were circling above. No doubt the young eagle didn’t want to leave this magical place… and neither did I. Passionate members of the Green Mountain Eco Route - the world’s first biodiversity wine route - Tony and Cha offer their cottages as a key stop on a 4-day guided slack packer trail, which winds through the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve.
