Tony holds a rare honour: he is the only 'Zululand' resident to have been given membership of the New Orleans Mardi Gras 'Zulu Parade'. No less. Tony and Sharon are both keen bikers and full of stories from their travels… touring in Scotland for instance, or in Bali, where they have a second home. It is not hard to warm to them. Eden River sits on the banks of the Mahlongwa River, which loops lazily past the pool at the bottom of the garden, the light glinting off the water through palm fronds and fever trees. Fish eagles, swallows and even the occasional crocodile can be spotted from the decking. Upstairs rooms are large, light and decorated in a mix of African and South Pacific styles. All have en-suites and large balconies overlooking the river. While downstairs a large open-plan living/dining area and bar sports its Balinese rice store and grand colonial-era dresser. An inlaid stone lizard winds it way across the floor towards a huge railway-sleeper table and inviting leather sofas. Sharon and I discussed the region’s history, while Tony whipped up a culinary storm in the kitchen, which on arrival was washed down with wine from his copious cellar. Well rested and full of 'South African cooked breakfast' (you know what I mean!), I hit the road. I only wish I’d had time to walk the one kilometre along the river to the pristine beaches of the South Coast or the nearby croc farm, golf courses and the 'TC Robertson Nature Reserve'.
