I knew there was something different about this Karoo farm when I read the description of my cottage, named 'Hannes' after “a colourful ex farm employee, whose love of the Karoo, farming and alcohol, were in equal measure”! The owners certainly have an eye for stylish interiors, but they apply it with the same down-to-earth sense of humour which is evident even from a visit to their website. On the outside, the cottages remain simple, white, and typical of the area. However, inside they are bright, luxurious, romantic, minimalist suites, a treasure chest of Moroccan-inspired lights, Nespresso machines, Smeg fridges, fireplaces, squidgy sofas, white linen, fluffy towels, original artwork and monsoon showers that rain over sunken bath tubs. There is nothing 'simple' about the magnificent 'Paradys Huis' farmhouse that wonderful farm managers Chantelle and Stefan, plus a team of interior designers, have lovingly restored and modernised using the finest materials and the most meticulous finishes. A good example are the tiny black-and-white tiles under the claw-foot bath in one of the bathrooms that took two weeks to lay by hand. After a quick visit to help Chantelle feed a couple of baby lambs, I spent the rest of my day reading on the floating deck on the dam and my evening, by the fire, listening to the roaring quiet of the Karoo, munching olives and cheese from the farm and invoking the spirit of our friend Hannes with a bottle of local red. Pets are welcome.
