In the heart of Zululand, where King Shaka once hunted, the Hluhluwe Mfolozi Park is over 96,000 hectares (that's big!), the oldest in Africa and one of SA's best-kept secrets. Here, on a hill overlooking this big 5 wilderness, is Rhino Ridge. Using natural materials and modern, retro-inspired finishes, the owners have created almost a boutique bush hotel, offering a chic, sleek alternative to traditional, rustic lodges. I stayed in one of the bush villas and loved my slate-tiled shower, natural wood mirrors, corner sofa and especially the central open fireplace that separated bedroom from bathroom. As ever, my time was short, but I was in awe of the stories of game sightings from fellow guests. I retired from the elegant dining room early, but as it was a hot night I sat for a while on my balcony, enjoying the breeze and the sounds of the African bush. A full moon lit up the valley and I wondered what animals were busy hunting just below me, as I quickly drifted off to sleep to the harmonious sound of Zulu singing from the lodge. On my drive out, I couldn't believe my luck when I spotted a leopard in a tree just next to the road. Far from the madding crowds of Kruger, this little-known gem of a reserve is ideally located between the historic Anglo-Zulu battlefields and the beach lodges of the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park.
