Some people you just know are kindred GG spirits from your very first phone conversation. Jenny Wessels didn't have a plan when she began converting her old milking shed and silo into a house. Originally she had intended for the family to live in it, so she began building a wall here and a wall there, intermittently running off to the barn to rummage through the windows she'd salvaged to find one that would fit. The result is a large central living space and kitchen, with cosy bedrooms, lofts, passageways and courtyards leading off it. When she'd finished, Jenny realized that the children were about to leave home and she was pretty happy in the existing farmhouse, so hey presto, a self-catered holiday home was born. Jenny has furnished the house in simple, tasteful farm style and equipped the large family kitchen with absolutely everything you could possibly need. My personal favourite room, the Tower Suite, linked from the upstairs of the house by a walkway, was built on top of the silo. Jenny designed it for her daughter who, as Jenny says, “was a dreamer and always had her nose in a book”. As I sat in the window-seat with my own book, looking out across the pretty balcony onto countryside views outside, I could entirely understand where Jenny was coming from. A perfect base for a family or group to explore the Underberg and Midlands.
