For those who have yet to discover the rugged coastline of the West Coast, Jacobsbaai (or Jacob's Bay) is an undiscovered treat just down the coast from Paternoster. With its dazzling white-washed cottages, rocky and sandy beaches and sleepy harbour, Jacobsbaai feels more like a fishing village on a Greek island than an African town. It makes sense then that Wessel, lover of all things Mediterranean, has migrated here from Jo'burg and continued the theme in his little oasis of a guest villa. Arriving in time for a late and lazy antipasti lunch, I welcomed the cool of the dining room: concertina doors thrown wide open, white voile curtains blowing in the breeze, uninterrupted views of the sparkling sea just a hop, skip and jump across the gravelled garden (complete with upturned fishing boat) and the fynbos-covered dunes. Sipping ice-cold white wine and happily munching gourmet cured meats, olives and cheeses, hand-selected by Wessel, with home-made onion marmalade, I was instantly on holiday. Jacobsbaai has yet to be developed as a tourist destination so good restaurants are slightly harder to come by (the best and closest being Paternoster), so Wessel offers evening meals which he will gladly discuss and plan with guests in advance on a first-come-first-served basis (meaning everyone eats the same thing). A perfect place for a relaxing break from the city, or a base from which to explore the rest of the West Coast.
