Tucked between Fish Hoek and Simon's Town, Glencairn is a quiet valley of houses dotted along the mountainside with views of False Bay on one side, wetlands in the middle and mountains on the other. Overlooking all of this is Glen Lin, an upper-floor apartment, ably managed for Blair and Laura by Teresa and Pierre (plus Hunter, their dog) who live below. Laura has ensured that guests want for nothing during their stay, which explains why they return again and again, for longer and longer. The light and spacious open-plan living areas and bedrooms open up onto balconies to the front, but I loved the terraced garden to the rear which climbs steeply up the mountain and offers sheltered reading spots and a lovely braai area, out of reach of the notorious Cape winds. This is a great spot, just a short walk to the beach, favoured by kite surfers, with lots of mountain hikes to burn off the calories consumed in the Winelands further north. Its also a perfect base from which to explore the quirky fishing towns and rugged coastline of the Cape Peninsula, too often overlooked by those who only stay a couple of days in Cape Town itself. Teresa and Pierre know plenty of secret local hide-outs and are on hand should you need anything. Blair is also a guide, who uses GG to plan many of his tours, so you're in very safe hands! My advice? Stay for a month and live like a local!
