Meals: Self-catering. Good restaurants available a short drive away in Calitzdorp.
Directions: Coming from Cape Town on the R62, turn left just before Calitzdorp to Matjiesvlei. Follow the road for 7km until you reach a T-junction and turn left until you arrive at The River Farm. If you reach the river you've gone too far!
You ought to know by now that we GGers love a dirt road, and boy is this a good one! And right at the end of this twisty, windy, stop-the-car-for-another-photo-op beauty, is The River Farm. I was greeted at my home for the night, one of three identical one-bedroom cottages, by Jock the Jack Russell who, from that moment became my companion and protector (even when his 'mum' Bronwyn came down to visit). Inside my cottage I was delighted to find modern appliances and refreshingly simple but stylish design touches that are somewhat unusual in the Karoo. Black accent walls perfectly offset by bright white bed linen, and floating wooden shelves littered with well-chosen Penguin Classics. Walk, swim, fish, sit on the jetty and dip your toes in the river... just be. One of my favourite things about the Karoo is the light; sometimes dramatic, casting long, hard shadows in all directions, sometimes subtle, changing the moods of the mountains and sky into a million pastel shades of purple, pink and orange. I don't want to give too much of the surprise away, but there is a breathtakingly good reason that The River Farm is so-called. The cottages are exclusively for adults, but there is a larger converted old school-house where families with kids can play till the cows come home and the stars come out.
