Directions: From CT take N2 past the airport, take exit 43 Broadway Bvd. Left at lights. From the next lights 6.3km exactly, turn right into Eikendal Rd. Follow up road, jink left onto tarmac strip and follow to top and Longfield House.
Perched on the foothills of the dramatic Helderberg mountains, Longfield occupies a truly sensational vantage that drifts across the Winelands and over to the very tip of False Bay at Cape Point. Dreamy by day and by night (when Cape Town’s lights put on their glitzy show), there are three cottages from which to enjoy the view. All are fresh, breezy and decorated in a relaxed country-house style and many of the furnishings are rare, early-Cape family heirlooms. This is luxury self-catering. Each cottage has its own private patio or lawn, comfy beds are made up with the highest-quality linen and there are spoiling lotions in the bathrooms and coffee-table books on SA wine, flora and fauna etc, and African objets d’art in the cosy living areas with a wood-burner for good measure. You’ll probably want to disappear into your own world here, but Nini and Pieter, who live on the mountain with you, are the nicest people you could wish to meet. Formerly wine-farmers themselves, they will happily point you in the direction of good wineries, gardens (Nini recently having penned a book on Remarkable Gardens of South Africa), restaurants and golf courses, all within easy striking distance. But it’s quite possible you won’t want to go anywhere, what with the almond and olive trees (they also bottle their own olives and press their own oil) and the pool in the rolling hills of their beautiful garden. This is a wonderfully secluded spot, serene and calm and ideally placed for many of the Cape’s attractions.
