A Shucking Good Time
They promise the best 10 days of your winter. A bold claim. But in my opinion, an all too modest one.
The annual Knysna Oyster Festival is one of South Africa’s most popular festivals with huge appeal for sports lovers, foodies, families and those in search of a great party. Besides the well-known activities such as The Big 5 Challenge, you’ll find more oyster-themed things than you ever dreamt possible as well as plenty more food and wine options. And why not pay a visit to the officially recognised Rastafarian village just outside town? My personal highlight was taking part in the ‘waitron race’ where teams of two have to open a bottle of wine, fill two glasses and run the gauntlet. Spilling penalties will be paid in the bar later and, of course, dress-up is compulsory. 10 days, over 100 events, 60,000 visitors and over R1 million raised for charity. Get there.
The 28th Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival takes place from 1 -10 July 2011 in the picturesque Garden Route town of Knysna.
