Capelands Restaurant Mangiare

With the soft tones of Louis Armstrong wafting from the 1974 Wurlitzer jukebox and an uninterrupted view of the entirety of False Bay before me, Johann opened a 1999 Sassicaia to complement my hand-made potato gnocchi, Parma ham, olive and sun-dried tomato. 'I could die with this wine; it sings to me!', declaimed Johann, who has brought a rare passion, talent and skill for fine wine and dining to this breathtaking new country venue. Capelands Restaurant Mangiare, with its outstanding setting, cooking and wine list, is poised to become a very bright star… very soon.

Hartenberg Estate

Stellenbosch

Restaurants

Hartenberg Estate

Hartenberg Estate, situated just outside Stellenbosch on the famed wine route possibly has one of the best red wines in the country. So too, views, gardens, happy sheep, bird life and as I have just discovered, food as well. One of the best cuts of rib-eye steak paired with all of the above- life surely cant get much better. With an option of snacks to go with your wine tasting, a simple but delicious daily menu and what looked like lip-smackingly delicious picnic baskets this is one of the best summer winelands venues for sure.

Haute Cabrière Restaurant

Restaurants

Haute Cabrière Restaurant

With new head chef Ryan at the helm, Haute Cabrière is fast becoming the place to eat this summer. Views from the restaurant stretch out in front you and the farm creates stellar wines, but it is still the food that steals the show. HC offers exciting, innovative and seasonal dishes and this is our go-to restaurant for the season. Our top pick? The brilliant Table d'Haute lunch menu.

Joostenberg Bistro

Hearty, country breakfasts and delectable lunches are served in this open-hearted, roomy, friendly bistro. Fresh local produce and the seasons dictate the menu, with their own farm-reared pork and hand-crafted wines always a feature. In winter snuggle in next to the huge log fire and in summer watch the kids playing on the lawns from the shaded stoep. Platform 1 Eatery

Elgin

Restaurants

Platform 1 Eatery

A mix of the following ingredients, in my book, makes for the perfect restaurant: great wine, 'country-bistro' food, warm service and super value. In the case of Platform 1 Eatery, throw in one of the quirkiest settings for a restaurant in one of the most beautiful and most under-rated areas in the Winelands and you are set for a sure thing! Adjoining the tasting room of Wintersdrift, Platform 1 Eatery, as the name suggests, is in the old station room of Elgin Train Station and is reason enough to return to the area again and again. Without wanting to give away too much more, go and discover it for yourself!

Readers Restaurant

Restaurants

Readers Restaurant

Built in 1754, Readers was the home for the Reader or Sick Comforter before it become the first school in the area, but has been a restaurant and gallery since 1997. This was the moment when Carol Collins first started impressing locals and visitors alike with a Cordon Bleu menu that changes depending on the availability of fresh ingredients. Take a small table on the front verandah and enjoy specials of ostrich fillet with rich gooseberry and amarula sauce or rack of lamb with feta and Pernod. They have a wonderfully relaxed hands-on approach.

The Shuntin' Shed

Botrivier

Restaurants

The Shuntin' Shed

Situated in a disused train station shed in the beautiful valley town of Botrivier, The Shuntin' Shed already promises a healthy dose of quirkiness and fun. Famous for their crunchy crisp pizza bases and pork belly ribs (or both combined), and situated right next door to Beaumont and Luddite Wineries, the restaurant is a must-try. Sit back in the old train chairs and travel back in time. With wines from the area, beautiful micro-brewed beer and plenty of country charm, The Shuntin' Shed will be a place you find yourself missing when you just want to get away from it all. Book in to one of our fantastic properties in the area and you will be guaranteed a memorable weekend away.

Umami Restaurant

Umami Restaurant

Just off Stellenbosch's famous Dorp Street is the shaded courtyard oasis Umami (5th taste). Toerie leaves nothing to chance. Sourcing local ingredients wherever possible, he literally makes everything himself on the premises, including ice cream, breads, cured and smoked meats and all his sauces and stocks. They specialise in pairing all their fab food with Stellenbosch's fine wines and the knowledgeable staff will guide you through a wonderfully creative and casual culinary treat.

About Cape Winelands

For sophisticates - like myself - who have come to expect the finer things in life, the Cape Winelands are the only place to go. They cover a relatively small area of verdant valleys and vertical mountains that spring up out of the sea on the far side of the Cape Flats, about an hour east of Cape Town. Centred around the towns of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Wellington, Worcester and Robertson, this is the heart of the South African wine industry, encompassing more than 200 wine farms.
