B's Steakhouse
Hemel-en-Aarde
Restaurants
Bruce reckons 'life is too short to eat bad food'. Life may also be too short to get through one of his 900g T-bones! Without doubt my favourite steakhouse in S.A. I have the same thing every time, sirloin with garlic and pinotage butter and 'The Ultimate Onion'. The wine list has everything worth including and the Irish coffees are deadly. Simple, friendly, what you see is what you get, this is the real deal!

Creation Wines
Hemel-en-Aarde
Wine
My first exposure to Creation was on asking a Cape wine master for a Sauvignon Blanc recommendation. It took him 1 second to hand over a bottle of Creation and a love affair began. Situated at the foothills of the Babylons Toren mountains, a scenic terrace provides a dream setting for Creation's innovative food and wine pairings, wine tastings or scrumptious antipasto platters.
- Prices: Food and wine pairing R80, antipasto platter for 2 R180.

Heaven
Restaurants
I suppose Heaven is a meet and right way to describe the view from the restaurant deck, straight down the Hemel-en-Aarde wine valley all the way to the ocean. Bruce Henderson, a Hermanus culinary institution in himself, and Yolande Steenkamp prepare delicious fresh brunch, lunch and high tea in an intimate atmosphere. Chicken breasts stuffed with mature Dutch cheese and black cherries was my choice... heavenly of course.

Hook, Line and Sinker Restaurant
Pringle Bay
Restaurants
Jackie and Stefan do literally everything themselves here (including spud peeling and washing up). There's space for only 24 people so you MUST book, as it's a crime to miss out on the best paper-wrapped hake and chips in the world (as one happy diner wrote on the wall). Evenings are a la carte with seafood leading the way (lobster thermidor, line fish, crab bisque, Mozambique prawns...). Steaks served on Weds and Sun.
- Prices: Lunch-time hake and chips R45, evening mains R60 - R120, corkage R20.
- Contact: 382 Crescent Rd, Pringle Bay

Old Gaol on Church Square
Cafés/galleries
I thought I knew what milk tart tasted like until I had the pleasure of experiencing one here: the friendly Xhosa ladies who run the show at the Old Gaol bake it the old-fashioned way in copper pans over hot coals in the yard. You can also get traditional roosterkoek and other South African specialities, although if you do you’ll have to save the milk tart for later... Just opposite Swellendam’s Dutch Reformed Church, it’s the perfect place for a pick-me-up while visiting the Drostdy Museum, whether you choose the cosy main dining room, sunny conservatory section or outside tables; I ended up staying most of the morning and left clutching even more goodies from the little shop. Extra offerings are full facilities for parents with children, a jungle gym, swings, sandpit on the lawn under trees. There is also a collection of antique horse carts on show. A super place.
- Prices: Special of the day R48 - R105. The price per main course is between R65 - R105.

Raka
Wine
I became a fan of Raka wines long before I made it to the winery. In restaurants, bars and friends' houses, I challenge anyone to find a better shiraz than Raka's Biography. The small, personal, family-run estate is named after Piet's beloved fishing boat. Piet and Elna Dreyer's genius is complimented by a slightly Mad Hatter approach to life. Wonderful people making wonderful wine!
- Prices: R23 for a rosé to R90 for award-winning shiraz.
