Kayak Paternoster

This must surely be the best way to start your day in Paternoster! After a short beach briefing, hop onto your kayak (all safety gear and equipment supplied) for a gentle paddle to a penguin colony on a rocky outcrop. The route is easy and geared for enjoyment and safety. Dolphins, seals and whales are common in the bay and the birdlife is incredible. Booking is essential and trips run in the morning in spring, summer and autumn.

Buy a ticket and get taken by a local taxi on a mystery "live theatre in the lounge" route through Darling. The people of Darling open their homes to host professional local and international artists. The best part is, you don't know who or what you might see. This is a one-of-a-kind theatrical adventure that I doubt exists anywhere else in the world. The Voorkamerfest is held annually the first weekend in September, the start of the Spring Flower festivities. Online and telephone bookings open 1 July.

About West Coast

For a relatively small city, Cape Town spreads out a long way, but I always find it remarkable how easily you can escape the urban sprawl and find yourself in wild country if you travel along the west coast. The West Coast and Cederberg make for low-stress, high-reward travel, all within just an hour or two of the so-called Mother City.
