Lesodi Trail

This short trail should take about two hours and is great for birding. Starting opposite Sanford Heights Tea Room (near the Magoebaskloof Hotel) it carves down the gorge through magnificent protected indigenous forest where the birding is at its best. There's a particularly good viewpoint en route too. Look out for amazing strangler figs and the cathedral tree as well as a troop of samango monkeys near the hotel and the narina trogon and Cape parrot.
Prices: Nominal entry fee at the start.

Louis Changuion Trail

This is a 11km circular trail established by local volunteers to show you the beauty of their 240ha stretch of afro-montane grassland on this northern fringe of the Drakensberg. Starting from Haenertsburg it meanders up to the cemetery crossing grassland and indigenous forest with wild flowers and endemic plants to look out for en route. The views are great, there's a little brook to dangle hot feet in and conveniently constructed picnic spots to sit at and watch for the Wolkberg Zulu butterfly and the blue swallow (Sept - Apr).
Prices: Free entry, buy the map for R5 from the Atholl Arms or Haenertsburg Tourist Office, or Magoebaskloof Hotel.

Rooikat Trail

You're unlikely to actually see a rooikat (the Afrikaans name for caracal) on this trail as they are nocturnal, but you may well see bushbuck, duiker, baboon and vervet and samango monkeys. A good walk for hot days, much of the 11km circular trail heads through indigenous pine forest and trees like forest cabbage, Natal mahogany and matumi. Be ready for some seriously steep inclines and declines. Allow five hours in total (to make time for that picnic and a dip in the Bobs River).
Prices: Nominal entry fee to be obtained at entrance to the New Agatha State Forest station. Map available on request.

About Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, formerly the Eastern Transvaal, means 'the place where the sun rises', which should give you a pretty good indication of where it is: smack on South Africa's eastern border, wedged in between the Drakensberg and Mozambique.
