Cavalli Estate

Estate dining

Description

Cavalli Estate was conceived less as a traditional wine farm and more as a multidisciplinary destination. Wine, architecture, indigenous landscaping, equestrian culture and contemporary art exist on this 100-hectare property in the Helderberg region as parallel identities rather than separate attractions.

Positioned between Stellenbosch and Somerset West, Cavalli immediately distinguishes itself through its physical design. The main public spaces sit low against the landscape, framed by expansive panoramic mountain views.

Rather than competing with the scenery, the architecture appears to participate with it, allowing the surrounding Helderberg range and indigenous gardens to remain central to the experience. Water, in particular, shapes much of the estate’s atmosphere — from the still dams surrounding the restaurant to the quiet symmetry reflected throughout the grounds.

While wine remains foundational to Cavalli, the estate avoids the performative excess often associated with luxury wine tourism. Tastings take place within an understated subterranean wine lounge, where the focus stays firmly on the wines themselves. Under winemaker Craig Barnard, Cavalli’s portfolio has accumulated a steady stream of local and international recognition, particularly for wines such as the Cremello white blend, Filly Chenin Blanc and Colt Cabernet Sauvignon. Awards include Michelangelo Gold medals, high Tim Atkin scores, Platter’s Guide recognition and Prescient Report placements. The estate’s Cremello blend also received the Grande Roche Trophy for Best White Blend at the National Wine Challenge.

The restaurant forms another major part of Cavalli’s identity. Positioned above a dam with uninterrupted mountain views, the space manages to feel both dramatic and serene. Menus centre around seasonal produce and contemporary fine dining without becoming overly technical or inaccessible. Sustainability appears deeply embedded within the restaurant’s operational philosophy, with Cavalli becoming the first Green Star-rated restaurant in South Africa. The kitchen works closely with local producers and places emphasis on ingredient-driven cooking shaped by seasonality rather than trend cycles.

Recognition within the hospitality industry has followed consistently. In 2014, Cavalli Restaurant was named South Africa’s Most Stylish Restaurant at the Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards and has earned stars in 2024, 2025 and 2026. The estate itself has also received Great Wine Capitals Best of Wine Tourism awards for both Architecture & Landscapes and Art & Culture. Internationally, Cavalli was included on Food & Wine magazine’s global “GO List” in 2017, placing it among a small group of South African destinations recognised by the publication.

Art plays a significant role throughout the estate as well. The Cavalli Gallery showcases contemporary South African artists within a purpose-built exhibition space that feels integrated into the broader property rather than appended to it. Sculptures and installations appear throughout the grounds, softening the boundary between cultivated landscape and curated gallery experience.

Yet despite the scale and polish of the estate, Cavalli rarely feels theatrical. The strongest moments tend to be quieter ones: light shifting across the dams in late afternoon, horses moving through nearby paddocks, or long lunches unfolding against the mountain backdrop. For all its awards and architectural precision, the estate remains most compelling when experienced slowly.

Mobility: Cavalli’s main hospitality spaces are generally accessible, with modern pathways and structured facilities throughout the estate. Guests with specific mobility requirements should still confirm accessibility details directly with the property before visiting.

Sustainability: Cavalli participates in the WWF Conservation Champions programme and places strong emphasis on indigenous landscaping, conservation and sustainable restaurant sourcing practices. The restaurant was also the first Green Star-rated restaurant in South Africa.

Ethicality: The estate is committed to internal development, with cellar assistants and other team members being upskilled in their areas of interest and capability on the property.
