Homegrown, flavoursome eating
Melfort is not your run-of-the-mill restaurant. It’s a labour of love, legacy, and healing wrapped up in every dish. Co-owner Tazmin’s story is one of sheer determination, health battles, and a deep connection to family roots. She started life as a chef at Saltwood, training hard and pushing herself for three years before landing a spot at Salffi’s Roundhouse, one of South Africa’s top kitchens. Rising at 4 am, working long shifts, squeezing gym sessions in between Tazmin was living the chef’s grind. But all that changed in a heartbeat.
After taking her second COVID vaccine to travel to Australia, she was blindsided by an autoimmune disease that flipped her world upside down. Overnight, the energetic young woman who once powered through every day found herself unable to get out of bed. She fought hard to keep going but had to resign, feeling like she was giving up on the dream she’d planned since childhood.
Tazmin returned home to her parents, unsure whether to study something new at university or find another path. Then Saltwood Culinary School reached out to offer her a teaching job. It was a sign. Teaching gave her time to recover physically and mentally but didn’t quell the restless fire of creativity inside her. So she made a bold move to Philippi, embracing a slower, more mindful organic lifestyle. She cut out gluten, dairy, processed oils, and embraced wild, alternative therapies not because it was easy but to fight the root cause rather than just suppress symptoms with cortisone.
Melfort is named after her grandfather’s farm in Zimbabwe. He was a white farmer whose land was taken away during political upheaval, and the family legacy was nearly lost. Through Melfort, Tazmin honours him and revives that farming spirit on Cape Town’s doorstep. This restaurant celebrates seasonal, locally sourced produce, bringing the tastes of surrounding farms and the wild Cape Point coast to the plate. But Melfort refuses the label “health food.” Instead, it’s about conscious cooking: food that nourishes the body while bursting with flavour and soul.
One signature dish exemplifies this ethos, the Chaka squid from the Cape coast, paired with foraged herbs, June spinach, and sea pumpkin leaves from Cape Point. It’s a bright, fresh dish that excites the palate and tells a story about the region’s bounty few know well.
What makes Melfort stand apart is the authentic story behind it a story of resilience, legacy, and transformation. Tazmin’s journey from raw chef to teacher to restaurateur is lived proof that food can heal beyond the plate. It’s a tribute to family ties, hard lessons, and dreams recalibrated in the face of hardship. Melfort invites diners not just to feast but to connect to taste a heritage reclaimed and a future carefully taken care off.
So if you’re looking for a restaurant that goes beyond the usual hype, one that blends farm, family, and healing in an honest way, Melfort is that rare gem. It’s not just about what you eat, but why and how bringing us all a little closer to our roots, our health, and each other.
