private tree collection
Originally set out as a private tree collection of Englishman Henry Arderne, the gardens now are curated by the City and a group of friends of the garden. Expect to see vast, fully grown specimens of trees from around the world (including trees that survived the Hiroshima bombs) in peaceful and romantic surroundings. The goslings are Egyptian geese – all one family – who strut around in friendly fashion and charm the children.
They have monthly tours on the first Saturday of every month (except January) at 10 am. A member of the Friends of Arderne Gardens will take you round explaining the history of the Ardernes and how their passion for trees created one of the most beautiful public spaces in Cape Town. There is a small donation requested for the tour. In return a beautiful coloured map is given away.
You can also just stroll through the five-acre site at your own pace. Entrance is free.
