Gubas de Hoek

Set along a beautiful plane-tree lined and dabble-shaded street, GUBAS DE HOEK meet eat sleep sits just a few metres from the centre of the beautiful town of Robertson.

The house with its large garden is from the turn of the last century with a double bay front and original shutters and doors in the main building. For an urban property, this is a large one and you’ll find a large variety of rooms: there is one two-bedroom freestanding self-catering cottages with a private outside area and also private gated off street parking.

Four rooms are with direct pool and garden access and two rooms in the oldest part of the house have high ceilings and fans for a natural airflow.

A separate thatched building built in 2016 offers a further four rooms, two of which are fully wheelchair accessible. Up a winding staircase built into a Karoo tree, you’ll find the last two rooms with mountain views and exposed ceilings to the thatch work above with sumptuous chaise lounges to recline in after a hard day of wine tasting.

The gardens and public spaces here number almost as many as the rooms and are just as eclectic: there’s a boules court, a parkour trail, a hammock, a grassed and shaded pool recliner area and in between all of that, a vegetable and herb garden.

The covered barbecue and dining area invites for a get together and there is a fully equipped guest kitchen.
GuBa, in case you’re wondering, is not one but two people, Gunter and Balbina, who bought an old restaurant called De Hoek way back in 2004 and converted into the eclectic yet serine guesthouse it is today.

Sustainability: The house is equipped with solar PV, solar thermal waterheating and over 75% of their waste is recycled. This creates a small business for locals.

The five staff, Malvin, Patience, Eden, Su-Ellen and Nancy, are all on full-time twelve month contracts and as you’ll see from pictures hanging in the hall, looked after like family by Gunter and Balbina.

Mobility: They have 2 rooms which are suitable for physically challenged guests. There are no steps from the parking.

Children: They accept children of all ages in their comfort rooms and self-catering cottage. They provide a baby bath with tools for toddlers. Their Vita Parkour, the swimming pool is loved for the older ones.
