hotel at airport
You might think that staying in the industrial area of one of Africa’s major international airports during your holiday wouldn’t perhaps be the first choice of locations – but Hotel Verde belies its location completely and is very far from being just another concrete block airport overnighter.
For a start, it has a wonderful garden, which has a footprint about three times that of the hotel itself, which is peaceful, secure and serine (again amazing considering it’s next to an airport). There’s a ecologically sensitive swimming pool and jogging/walking trails you can take through it and a host of wildlife too.
Inside, the hotel offers pretty much everything you’d expect from an airport hotel: there’s a gym, air-conditioning, modern and sophisticated rooms and so on but that’s where the airport hotel similarities stop. The entire building, from conception to day-to-day management, functions in a sustainable way – waste, water, electricity, water heating etc. are all explicitly and constantly managed. You, as the guest, are invited (and rewarded) for joining in, with the hotel’s own currency called Verdinos – you’re actually paid for behaving in a green way during your stay.
Of course, this natural environment sustainability is matched by social responsibility to staff and surrounding communities, many of whom are the poorest in the city. The hotel offers a complimentary shuttle to and from the airport every 30mins between the hours of 04h00 and midnight. They also offer a daily shuttle to the V&A Waterfront and back at a rate per person. No need to hire a car if you’re staying here.
Hotel Verde is perfectly located a mere 400m away from Cape Town International Airport and perfect to access the eastern half of Cape Town, in particular the political and cultural sites of Langa, Gugulethu and Nyanga without having to compromise in accommodation standard.
Children: They accept children under the age of 12 years sharing a room with parents, there are no particular children’s activities on site, but they do offer a ‘toddlers corner” at their restaurant to keep the little ones busy whilst parents enjoy a meal at their Nuovo Restaurant.
Mobility: The hotel offers two universally accessible rooms. Rooms can be accessed directly via the hotel elevator either from the basement or from the ground floor.
