local food with marimba band
While most understand the concept of Ubuntu (community) very few non-Xhosa speakers have heard of Ububele (kindness, generosity and compassion). It takes a person with this particular spirit to open up their home to guests from far and wide, to cook for them.
That’s what Sheila and Monica Mahloane have been doing for over 25 years. This mother and daughter team, with the help of four other women in the kitchen, provide dinner and a show for diners who venture out to Langa for them. The menu changes based on season and availability, but one thing you can count on is a plate unapologetically packed with flavour. Chakalaka, a local favourite, ostrich stew, curried vegetables and herb carrots are just some of the staple dishes.
While you enjoy your lunch or dinner, a marimba band will not only entertain but encourage you to join in with creating the soundscape.
Lelapa is conveniently located as you enter Langa from Settlers Way; on a residential road between the Langa Mosque and the community sports field. When you make your reservation, please request that your host meet you outside as the house numbers on the street don’t always perfectly correlate with map apps.
