Lion’s Head and Pipe Track

Lion’s Head is one of Cape Town’s most popular hiking spots, offering panoramic views of the city, Table Mountain, and the Atlantic Ocean. The moderately challenging hike takes you along spiraling trails, with a rewarding summit perfect for sunrise or sunset views. It’s a must-do for outdoor enthusiasts visiting Cape Town.

If you like views and natural splendour, we’d argue that both are in such abundance on both these walks that you may never match them again: try if you can to catch the dawn or full moon on Lion’s Head (which has a helter-skelter like path winding to the top) or if this is too vertiginous, the Pipe Track walk which is much less steep and shadows the Twelve Apostles instead.

Access the Lion’s Head hike either from Signal Hill Road (which has parking) or Kloof Road (which has less). Access the Pipe Track from the top of Kloof Nek (there’s a MyCiti bus stop right there for convenience). Grab something from the foodtruck at the entrance on your way out!
