guest house at foot of mountain
When you slip into Constantia Hills, Majini Guest House immediately feels like a pause button- an elegant escape from Cape Town’s usual tempo. “Majini,” meaning “On the Water” in Swahili, consists of three self-catering cottages nestled in lush gardens, with distant views of mountains and wetlands. Opened in 2001, this property was once farmland. Today it is home that Suzy Digby-Smith has availed to travellers, both in spirit and design.
About 20 minutes from the city centre, Majini Guest House grants peace without cutting you off. The stillness of the lawns, the soft shadows under trees, the chirp of birds, all feel intentional. Comfortable and serene enough to encourage you to stay in, Majini Guest House will be waiting peacefully for you to return should you wish to explore Cape Town’s spoils. Award-winning restaurants and wine farms are a short drive away. Blue Flag beaches such as Camps Bay, Fish Hoek and Muizenberg are all less than 30kms from you. Hiking trails that venture into Newlands Forest as well as Silvermine Nature Reserve lay within the area as well – though if it’s exercise you’re hoping to achieve, there is a small gym onsite that consists of a stationary bike, treadmill, rowing machine and basic weights.
Majini comprises three distinct cottages, each self-catering, each with its own layout and charm. The Hadedas Cottage is the largest. With two bedrooms, it is ideal for families or friends. The sitting room and main bedroom have access to the large patio that boasts a magnificent view of Elephant’s Eye, the garden and pool.
The Gallery is a one-bedroom cottage that highlights owner Suzy’s artistic charm as there is a feature wall adorned with framed pieces she has collected. The sitting room opens onto a private patio with a Weber braai .
Lastly, The Pool House which is accurately positioned. The one bedroom cottage comes with a walk-in dressing area, and the living area has a wonderful wrap view of the pool and gardens.
Inside each cottage you’ll find all the essentials: well-equipped kitchen/kitchenette, WiFi, TV, safe and robes. Fresh linen and daily housekeeping are part of the package as well
Here, the pace is restorative. Mornings drift in slowly: coffee in the garden, a light breakfast under trees, sunshine filtering through leaves. You lounge poolside, dip into the pool, read, cook a light meal if you want, or head out to nearby wine farms. The interiors are cozy without fuss; the patios, gardens and views are what linger. Evenings may find you by fire in winter, or under stars in the summer, with gentle conversation or quiet reflection.
Children: Twin beds are available for the second bedroom in The Hadedas Cottage.
Sustainability: The gardens incorporate fresh produce.
Ethicality: There are no apparent initiatives at this time.
Mobility: Access is relatively straightforward: each cottage sits on ground or low steps; patios are accessible. Guests with mobility needs should clarify when booking.
