boutique hotel
When you arrive at The Spade Boutique Hotel and Spa, what strikes you first is the contrast: sleek glass against stone all in the heart of Khayelitsha – one of Cape Town’s largest townships. Translated to “a new home,” this neighborhood is a place that has long been celebrated for its energy, resilience, and culture, but rarely associated with boutique hospitality. The Spade has changed that narrative. It doesn’t shy away from where it stands; instead, it takes pride in bringing four-star standards to a neighbourhood where such a property would have been unthinkable not so long ago.
Inside, the mood is polished but warm. Neutral tones, soft lighting, and contemporary finishes set the stage for 13 individually designed rooms and suites. Each feels like a cocoon – on the ground floor is the first set of Standard Rooms which can be booked as a Family Suite. Climb a flight of stairs and the Executive Suites, which are slightly larger where bathrooms that comprise of both a shower and bath, can be found. Two Luxury Suites on site come complete with small kitchenettes as well as a bath and shower in the bathroom. All rooms boast king sized beds dressed with the finest cotton linens, air conditioning, unlimited WiFi, Smart TV (MNet & DSTV), minibar, tea/coffee station, hairdryer, minibar, in-room safe. Additional beds can be made available should guests need them.
Views of Table Mountain, the Cape Winelands, and Helderberg Mountains give guests a unique perspective of how the Mother City stretches out. Enjoy sunrise and sunset from your private balcony. It is urban luxury rooted firmly in a township setting, offering a stay that feels both unexpected and affirming.
Beyond the sleeping spaces, the hotel boasts pristine communal luxury: a heated outdoor swimming pool, an in-house gym that includes a treadmill and stationary bike as well as free weights, a spa for massages and skin therapy, a restaurant that champions local flavours, and spacious lounges where guests can receive visitors. There is also a business centre, meeting and events rooms (the functions room has a capacity of 50 people; and the boardroom can accommodate 14 people) for those who come here both to work and retreat. A shuttle service, on request, can take you through the neighbourhood or even deliver you to/from the airport.
A stay here isn’t only about the hotel. To be in Khayelitsha is to be in one of Cape Town’s most dynamic spaces, where street art brightens walls, music flows from shisanyamas like Rands or KwaAce, and entrepreneurs have built coffee shops and cultural hubs from the ground up. Guests are well placed to explore the neighbourhood- though we suggest you do so with a local guides.
For those seeking Cape Town’s more familiar draws, The Spade is also well connected. The nearest wine farm is a 12km drive away while Monwabisi Beach is around the corner. Returning here after a day out feels distinct. To rest in a plush suite above the hum of Khayelitsha is to feel part of something contemporary; a signal that modern hospitality belongs everywhere in Cape Town, not only its wealthiest enclaves.
Children: There are two Family Suites onsite, which accommodate children in a separate but interleading room to adults. Unfortunately there are no cots available for small children.
Mobility: While the upper level of the hotel, and boardroom in the adjacent building, are only up a flight of stairs, there are rooms on the ground floor. The hotel restaurant and common areas are also fully wheelchair accessible.
Sustainability: locally-designed furniture, art and decor is produced by youth and artisans from Khayelitsha thereby.
Ethicality: The team of 12 staff are all residents of Langa, and have all worked at the hotel for many years. The Spade positions itself as a space where luxury does not displace township identity but amplifies it.
