comunity projects garden and dance school
As an award-winning model of responsible tourism and philanthropy, Uthando connects tourism and community development through innovative and meaningful partnerships.
Two of many project they helped develop are:
1. Started in response to the hunger that pervades Cape Town and the pressing need for environmental conservation in the city, Abalimi Bazekhaya (Harvesters from Home) promotes small scale urban farming. It’s about far more than planting veggies though, with produce being sold for gain and massive amounts of training and upskilling occurring as a result.
2. Your heart will soar visiting the children and young adult dancers at Zama Dance School, Nyanga. Started back in by Andrew Warth, himself a professional dancer for many years, the school has its own purpose-built studio in the heart of an impoverished area of the Cape Flats. It’s a beacon of light for young people of both genders. But this is no kitchen sink operation: Zama attracts sponsorship from major retail moguls and has former students in senior positions in dance companies all over the world.
You can contact Uthando projects to visit some of the projects at www.uthandosa.org, not all projects will be available to visit all the time, they also offer visits and tours to the notable Driftsands Nature Reserve.
