Hotel on landscaped park land
With over 200 years of history within its walls, The Vineyard is situated in six acres of attractively landscaped park land on the banks of the Liesbeek River, which flows through the property from Table Mountain. There are small vineyards within the garden still and large tortoises strolling about who call this place home.
This beautiful building is most unusual for its time in that it was built a very long way away from Cape Town itself and over two stories in a Regency (rather than a Cape Dutch) style. It was the original country home of Lady Anne Barnard, a fascinating and precocious artist, writer and activist who lived in the Cape at the turn of the 19th century – think Simone de Beauvoir. From inception, it’s been a radical place.
On conversion into a hotel, the Vineyard had extensions designed by highly acclaimed architects Jack Barnett and Revel Fox. The original building isn’t lost at all and is in fact enhanced by the updating. It is filled with works by leading South African artists and offers 226 rooms ranging from single to family suites, both mountain and courtyard facing. Each room is kitted with plush gowns and slippers, spacious beds dressed in inviting linen, a coffee making station and a Chromecast TV.
There are a few dining options with glowing reputations in their own rights at the Vineyard: The Square is a great favourite for breakfast and lunches that boast views of the meticulously manicured lawn. Morii Italiana treats diners to a contemporary expression of classic dishes, placing the focus on premium ingredients while celebrating the tradition of generous family-style dining. which offers a modern fusion style of cooking. Javaphiles will appreciate Long Cafe as it takes coffee culture seriously and offers an enviable selection of blends from both home and away. Lastly, Garden Lounge and Patio invites guests to linger; turning their late breakfast into an early dinner as the sunsets behind the Newlands Mountain range. It is suburban living personified: all necessary comforts within reach yet nestled in the serenity of nature.
The hotel offers its guests two swimming pools – one outdoor, surrounded by loungers and one heated indoor pool. There is a world-class spa on site and a well-equipped gym too. Travellers hoping to conduct business meetings and other events need only arrange for a boardroom to be booked; though larger spaces can be made available.
Sustainability: As a Fair Trade Tourism certified site, all recycling of waste is done on site. 80 solar panels and a further 68 solar/thermal panels provide energy to the entire hotel and restaurants. Grey-water harvesting is also utilised throughout the hotel. Indigenous gardening is supported by drip irrigation.
Children: They are happy to welcome children from the age of 0-12 in any suite accompanied by their parents.
Mobility: They have 4 Deluxe Courtyard Rooms that can accommodate guests that are mobility impaired. Should you need additional assistance, please advsie the team while making your booking.
Ethicality: workplace ethics are the backbone of the team structure. Regular wellness training is incorporated into the schedule and there is an on-site social worker to care to the needs of staff. Vineyard Hotel also assists the staff’s families through the Dare to Care programme which also offers financial assistance to organisations that support vulnerable communities.
